What Is a Union Sprinkler Fitter?

Sprinkler fitters are skilled pipefitting professionals who specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of fire protection systems. Through specialized training and hands-on experience, they develop the expertise needed to install fire protection solutions for a wide range of commercial, industrial, and residential applications.


What to Expect as a Pipe Fitter?

The primary responsibility of a sprinkler fitter is the installation of fire protection systems, including underground supply piping and overhead sprinkler piping designed to support fire suppression.

Safety is a top priority, and team members receive training in the proper use and care of industry tools and equipment, including pipe wrenches, threading machines, welding equipment, and aerial lifts.


Construction Projects

Sprinkler fitters work on a variety of construction projects ranging from residential developments to large-scale commercial and industrial facilities. Because much of the sprinkler piping is installed near roof structures, work may be performed on ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts, depending on project requirements.

Union Apprenticeship Program

Our apprenticeship program combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction through a nationally recognized curriculum. Apprentices complete a series of 19 courses covering the technical knowledge and practical skills required to become fully qualified sprinkler fitters.

 

Following a six-month probationary period, apprentices begin earning a percentage of the journeyman wage rate. Progress is reviewed every six months to ensure successful advancement in both job performance and coursework. As apprentices progress through the program, they become eligible for classification advancements and wage increases until completion of the five-year apprenticeship.

Qualifications Needed:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (birth certificate or Green Card may be required)
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the trade
  • Must have a discharge status other than dishonorable from military service (if applicable)
  • Must successfully pass a drug screening


Pay Rates

Apprentice wages are based on their classification level and are calculated as a percentage of the journeyman wage rate in the state where they are employed. Wage rates vary by state and are determined according to local economic conditions and industry agreements.

In addition to competitive compensation, apprentices participate in a comprehensive health and welfare program that includes medical coverage and life insurance. Eligible participants also begin earning pension benefits, providing valuable long-term financial security and support for their future.
